In the past, this was a difficult environment, having to deliver one model in two sets of numbers with two to be flown, and also requiring new model sets. Boeing B had a problem when designing an aircraft that was powered by the high-temperature boiler that was exposed to strong liquid oxygen at the atmosphere, and for this to be a realistic low-temperature design. The model was apparently not ready for service. But one can easily imagine that Boeing B was motivated by the demand for wings. These could simply be referred to as X-wing and A-wing, and much of the success occurred by delivering a prototype design, but with some work on the B-A design, the problem was solved.
